From September 23rd to 25th, the European Union (EU) in Malaysia proudly participated in the Campus with a Conscience event, hosted by Sunway Group at Sunway University. The EU Pavilion was a dynamic center of sustainability-focused initiatives, with key partners showcasing their efforts toward promoting a greener and more sustainable future.

At the EU Pavilion, the spotlight was on a range of EU-led projects and collaborations aimed at addressing environmental challenges, encouraging climate action, and fostering sustainable development. Each of the participating organizations plays a vital role in driving impactful change:

EU Green Deal
A comprehensive strategy by the EU, the Green Deal is a blueprint for transforming the EU economy and society to become climate-neutral by 2050. It aims to reduce carbon emissions, foster renewable energy, and safeguard biodiversity, while promoting economic growth through sustainable practices.

Eurocham Malaysia
Eurocham Malaysia has been at the forefront of bridging European and Malaysian business communities, emphasizing the importance of corporate sustainability. Their initiatives focus on encouraging businesses to adopt green practices, reduce their carbon footprints, and support the country’s transition to a low-carbon economy.

Semporna Islands Project (SIP)
The Semporna Islands Project is dedicated to the conservation of marine ecosystems in East Malaysia. Focusing on coral reef restoration and sustainable ocean farming, SIP not only protects vital biodiversity but also ensures that local communities benefit economically from sustainable marine practices.

Putrajaya Low Carbon City
Putrajaya Low Carbon City is leading Malaysia’s efforts to transform urban environments into eco-friendly spaces. Their mission is to implement smart, sustainable infrastructure and practices that reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, setting a national example for carbon reduction.

KAMI Project by the European Forest Institute (EFI)
The KAMI Project supports sustainable forest management in Malaysia, focusing on restoring degraded forests and promoting sustainable timber production. This initiative aligns with global efforts to conserve forests as crucial carbon sinks and biodiversity hotspots, ensuring that forests continue to thrive while meeting economic demands.

Malayan Tiger Conservation Efforts
With Malaysia’s iconic Malayan Tiger under threat of extinction, this initiative aims to raise awareness and support for tiger conservation. It focuses on protecting tiger habitats, reducing poaching, and promoting community engagement in wildlife conservation, which is essential for biodiversity preservation in Malaysia.

GIZ (German Corporation for International Cooperation)
GIZ supports sustainable development initiatives in Malaysia, working on projects that range from renewable energy to environmental policy reform. GIZ’s collaboration with local governments and organizations ensures that sustainability goals are integrated into policy-making and development planning.

Erasmus+
Erasmus+ promotes education, training, and youth exchange programs across the EU and beyond. By fostering international cooperation and dialogue on environmental sustainability, the program empowers young people and academic institutions to drive change through knowledge-sharing and innovation.

Youth Environment Living Labs (YELL)
The Youth Environment Living Labs initiative engages young people in Malaysia and across Southeast Asia in hands-on environmental projects. By promoting innovative solutions to local environmental issues, it aims to create a new generation of eco-conscious leaders and change-makers.

In addition to the impressive lineup of partners, the event featured Gabriella Robinson and Raj Mahal as emcees, who engaged attendees by sharing the vision and purpose behind each of these sustainability efforts. They guided visitors through the various booths, explaining how each organization contributes to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

The EU Pavilion also hosted a Sustainable Cooking Vegan Sharing Session by Ms. Anna Lees, highlighting how dietary choices can reduce environmental impact. The session offered practical insights on plant-based cuisine and its role in combating climate change.

Through its participation in Campus with a Conscience, the EU in Malaysia underscored its dedication to promoting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and inspiring collaborative action. By partnering with local and international organizations, the EU is committed to driving meaningful progress toward a more sustainable and equitable world.

Together, we can protect our planet. Join us in taking action—whether through supporting conservation efforts, making sustainable choices, or becoming a part of the global dialogue on climate change.
